I’ve clearly been driving the truck too much. Tried to put the CX-3 in park with the windshield wiper stalk tonight. Yikes.

It’s been 13 years since I last drove my Previa, and longer since I drove it regularly, and I still occasionally find myself reaching for the column shift. Even if I feel fine, I tend to take it as a sign that maybe I don’t have it together enough to actually be driving when it happens.
Also: All automatics should be column shift. Or at least button/dial shift. No need to waste space on a big shifter just to imitate the manual configuration.

Floor shifters were for that crapbox Chevette or Tempo, not for a proper car for a dignified owner.

Not quite as bad as the time I climbed into my parents’ Caprice after driving the Rabbit for a long time, pulled away from the curb, then lifted my left foot and stomped on the brake.

I drive a modern MB with a column shift, and the fintail also has column shift (hmm maybe that’s where an automatic should be? just sayin). Every time I drive another car, I blindly reach for the column shift lever, firmly in muscle memory now.

I went from a column shift, to a console shift, to manual floor shift, to a column shift, to a manual console shift. I’ve tried putting the manual GTI in park with the wiper stalk and using the clutch as a parking brake like the Silverado I owned before it when I was particularly tired.

Every time I went to start the planes this weekend, I stepped on the left rudder first. It got to be embarrassing.

I don't know how I haven't snapped the wiper stalk off of my wife's RAV4 yet.

If I’ve driven my forklift too much, I’ll often hop
in my car and try to put it in reverse by engaging the left blinker. (On a toyota forklift, the “blinker” stalk is the forward/reverse lever)
